The Community Information Area includes bulletin boards, brochure racks and bins. The purpose of this area is to provide space for local non-profit and non-commercial organizations involved in educational, civic, cultural, or charitable activities to display notices and flyers that promote awareness of services and events of interest to the community.
The library endorses the American Library Association (ALA) Library Bill of Rights and the ALA interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights as related to library exhibit spaces and bulletin boards. Concerns about a specific display or materials should be addressed to the Library Director, using the procedures outlined in the Appeal of Library Policy or Procedures policy.
General Guidelines:
All information or postings must be submitted to library staff for approval, posting, and subsequent removal. The Library reserves the right to remove any material from the Community Information Area at any time and for any reason.
Materials will be accepted on a space available basis using the following priorities:
- Notices of Library programs, events, activities, and services;
- Notices of community interest from organizations with a Scarborough affiliation; and
- Notices of cultural, educational or recreational topics of interest to the community.
Personal, commercial, or profit-making postings are not allowed. Materials which will not be approved for display include petitions, public or legal notices, campaign literature, information that any reasonable person would interpret as an endorsement of a particular religion or political party, and any material deemed discriminatory. Referenda or election related materials pertaining to the library are permitted.
Information regarding contests or solicitations, notices of merchandise for sale, notices of sales or auctions may not be displayed unless event or sale is for the benefit of a local non-profit organization. No in-person solicitations are permitted.
Materials having no specific date may be displayed for a reasonable length of time as determined by the library according to space available.
Display or posting of information does not indicate library endorsement; nor does the library accept responsibility for the accuracy of the statements made in such materials.
The library is not responsible for the preservation, protection, or returning of materials.
Exceptions to this policy are permitted solely at the discretion of the Library Director.
Bulletin Boards:
Items to be displayed should be no larger than 12”x18” and must meet acceptable standards as determined by the library.
Consistent with the Library’s Holidays and Observances policy, materials on events which explore historic, intellectual, musical or other cultural aspects of religions or religious ideas sponsored by local denominational groups may be displayed.
Informational or non-partisan political events may be displayed. No campaign materials or petitions will be permitted.
Brochure racks and bins:
- Multiple copies of an item will be accepted on a space available basis.
- Groups may be restricted in the number of different items on display.
