Part-Time | Approximately 2 Hours Each School-Day Afternoon with potential for additional per diem hours
Do you enjoy working with middle school students? Are you comfortable being in a room with a lot of Main Character Energy? Are you someone who can connect with young people, set clear expectations, and bring a calm, positive presence to a busy environment? Are you good with learning approximately eighty names (over time, not immediately! Not required!) but mostly being referred to as “librarian” or “bruh”?
We are looking for someone who understands this age group and can help us keep the library welcoming, safe, and enjoyable for everyone as they read, do homework, use library resources, attend programs, play games, and – most importantly – spend time with friends.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Working alongside Youth Services staff, you will:
- Welcome and engage with students as they arrive after school
- Build positive, respectful relationships with middle schoolers
- Actively supervise busy youth spaces
- Redirect behavior calmly, consistently, and respectfully
- Help students understand and meet expectations for shared library spaces
- Recognize situations that may need staff intervention and respond appropriately
- Support informal activities, games, crafts, and other after-school opportunities
- Help create an environment where young people feel that they belong
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
The strongest candidate will be someone who genuinely enjoys middle school students and understands that relationship-building is one of the best tools for creating a positive environment.
You might be a great fit if you:
- Have experience working with children, tweens, or teens
- Are comfortable supervising groups of students in an active, social environment
- Can redirect behavior calmly and respectfully
- Are warm and approachable while still maintaining clear boundaries
- Notice what is happening around you and step in before small problems become bigger ones
- Communicate well with both young people and coworkers
- Are dependable, patient, flexible, and comfortable with a little after-school energy and unpredictability
- Have a sense of humor and don't mind being surrounded by middle schoolers!
Experience in libraries is welcome, but experience successfully working with young people is a priority.
WHY THIS POSITION MATTERS
For many students, the library is their after-school place, a place to meet friends, decompress after the school day, explore their interests, and connect with trusted adults.
This position isn't simply about supervising a room. It's about helping create a community where young people are welcomed, respected, and supported while also learning how to share a public space responsibly.
Schedule: Approximately two hours each afternoon on school days
Location: Scarborough Public Library
Compensation: $19.10/hr
