We are excited to bring Italian music of the middle-to-late Baroque period to the Library with a special performance of The Presence of the Past by ScheckMate. Raffael Scheck and Timothy Burris formed the ensemble to explore and promote the works of Domenico Gabrielli, Benedetto Marcello, Antonio Caldara, Giovanni Battista Bononcini and their contemporaries. With Scheck playing cello and Burris playing lute and guitar, ScheckMate will revive music of the past that suggests the future through works including Giovanni Bononcini. By way of 19th-century works of transition including Weber, they will complete the circle with contemporary works that suggest the past, including Bachianas Brasileiras #5 by Villa-Lobos.
This special evening of music precedes the annual Portland Early Music Festival, a program of the Portland Conservatory of Music, being held October 26-28, 2018 in Portland. This event is free to attend and open to the public. Seating is limited. For more information about ScheckMate, visit www.baroquelute.com/scheckmate/
