Holidays and Observances

In general, the Library will be open for business as often as is practical, at the discretion of the Board of Trustees as it seeks to balance patron access with the ability to schedule adequate staff at its facilities. In accordance with this objective, the Library will close for public holidays declared and observed by the Town of Scarborough unless the Board elects to remain open due to patron demand. The Board may at its discretion also declare other days to be closed to the public due to staffing, budget, or other concerns.

It is in keeping with the mission of the Library to permit informational programs and provide materials on topics of public interest, and to serve as a forum for the discussion of these topics. This policy will be interpreted to include programs which explore historic, intellectual, musical or other cultural aspects of religions or religious ideas. It permits the display of library materials about timely and relevant religious topics. The Library specifically and categorically rejects any suggestion that such educational displays may be construed as advocacy for or against a specific religion or secular stance. Concerns about a specific display or observance should be addressed to the Library Director, using the procedures outlined in the Appeal of Library Policy or Procedures policy.
