Earth Day Celebration

Earth Day Festival, EV Charging Station, Scarborough Public Library

Join us for an Earth Day Festival from Noon to 3:00 pm. The event will celebrate two new ReVision Energy solar installations at the Library: an electric vehicle (EV) charging station and a rooftop solar panel array. Earth Day activities will include an appearance by News Center Maine meteorologist Jessica Conley and weather van Stormy, live music by The Incredulous String Band, electric vehicle demonstrations, a Minecraft Lab where players can build virtual solar arrays in the Library’s Minecraft world, and exhibits by these community organizations:

•Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency •Eastern Trail Alliance •ecomaine •Friends of the Scarborough Marsh •Scarborough Community Garden •Scarborough Garden Club •Scarborough Land Trust •Visit the seed planting station!

An official ribbon cutting of the EV charging station will take place at 1:00 pm. The station is powered by a small 4-panel solar array, enough to power 5,000 miles of driving. Driving on solar power is equivalent to paying $0.71/gallon for gas, but using completely clean, renewable energy that doesn’t burn any fossil fuels. The station was funded through donations from an anonymous citizen supporter, Central Maine Power, the Friends of the Scarborough Library, Maine Chevy Dealers & Pape Chevrolet, Noyes, Hall & Allen Insurance, ReVision Energy, Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, and the Town of Scarborough. Funding for future educational programming was provided by 350 Maine.

In addition to the station, Portland-based ReVision Energy also installed 86 solar panels on the Library’s rooftop. The 26.23-kilowatt array is expected to produce about 30,000 kilowatt-hours annually. That’s enough to offset almost 50,000 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of driving from Scarborough to San Francisco 17 times – or planting 579 trees. The array was funded by the Town of Scarborough through a power purchase agreement with ReVision Energy.

This event is FREE to attend!
