eBooks Anywhere, Anytime
An eBook is an electronic book (sometimes also called e-Book or digital book). It is a text and image-based publication in digital form produced on, published by, and readable on computers or other digital devices.
The Scarborough Library offers downloadable eBooks through two services: the 3M Cloud Library and Maine Infonet Download Library. The library owns all of the titles in the 3M Cloud Library and the collection is growing day by day. Scarborough librarians select the titles in the Cloud Library and set the loan rules.
The Maine Infonet Download Library is a shared service of some 200 Maine libraries. We contribute to the service, but do not select the titles nor do we set the loan rules.
To use either of these eBook services you need an active Scarborough Library card (not expired, fines less than $5.00, and no outstanding bills for missing material.

3M Cloud Library
The Cloud Library is the Scarborough Public Library's new digital collection of popular eBooks. Unlike Download Library (the statewide digital library), items in the Cloud Library are selected by our own Library staff and can only be checked out by Scarborough Public Library cardholders. We are the first library in Maine to offer this service to our cardholders.
The Library purchases and owns the E-books in the Cloud Library collection. Cloud Library loans are available to all Scarborough residents and those who work in Scarborough. You must have a valid Library card to access the service.
Cloud Library eBooks can be read on your Mac computer, your PC, your iOS (iPod Touch2, iPad) or Android mobile device or downloaded to a computer and transferred to an e-book reader (Nook, Nook Touch, Nook Color, Sony Reader, or Kobo eReader.) We also have Cloud Library eReaders available for checkout if you are new to the eBooks scene.
3M eReaders Available for Checkout
Ever wanted to read an eBook, but you don't have your own eReader? The Library now has five available for checkout! The best part about the eReaders is that they are not preloaded with titles so you get to pick your own from the 3M Cloud Library! They are kept at the Circulation Desk. Stop by the Adult Services Desk if you have any questions!
No titles are pre-loaded on the eReader.
Choose your 3M eBooks from the Discovery Station located in the Catalog lookup area. Then go to the Circulation Desk to check out a 3M eReader and we'll load your selections for you when we check out the eReader. And did we mention that our eReaders can read the text of your book to you?
OverDrive eBooks and Audiobooks from
Maine Infonet Download Library
The Maine Infonet Download Library is a shared service of some 200 Maine libraries. While the Cloud Library is powered by 3M, the Download Library is powered by a company called OverDrive. The terms "OverDrive" and "Download Library" are interchangeable. The OverDrive Media Console for desktops and mobile platforms is necessary to read eBooks or listen to audiobooks.
Maine InfoNet Download Library Library eBooks can be read on your PC, your Mac computer, your iOS (iPod Touch2, iPad) or Android mobile device, Kindle, or downloaded to a computer and transferred to an e-book reader (Nook, Nook Touch, Nook Color, Sony Reader, or Kobo eReader.) Powerful discovery tools enable you to find your next book fast with filtered search, personalized title recommendations and more. It's just like online shopping!
The Library owns the titles in the Download Library in common with all of the other participating libraries. The Download Library is different from the Cloud Library in that it also offers downloadable audiobooks. We contribute to the service, but do not select the titles nor do we set the loan rules.
We do not loan devices that can be used with the Download Library.
