Book Discussion Groups

The morning group meets the first Tuesday of the month at 10:00am in the Conference Room. The new evening group meets the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm in the Conference Room. Copies of the selected books can be requested through the Minerva catalog.

Morning Book Discussion - The Hello Girls

This is the story of how America's first women soldiers helped win World War I, earned the vote, and fought the U.S. Army. In 1918, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France. The army discharged the last Hello Girls in 1920, the same year Congress ratified the Nineteenth Amendment granting the ballot. When the operators sailed home, the army unexpectedly dismissed them without veterans' benefits.

Morning Book Discussion - Life in a Jar

Life in a Jar book cover

During World War II, Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker, organized a rescue network of fellow social workers to save 2,500 Jewish children from certain death in the Warsaw ghetto. Incredibly, after the war her heroism, like that of many others, was suppressed by communist Poland and remained virtually unknown for 60 years. Then, a group of Kansas teenagers turned it into a history project and  play called Life in a Jar.
